Davis Company PP New York, NY SN 9781719645348 LK fadavisat.mhmedical.com/content.aspx?aid=1188528886 RD 2024/10/04 AB This chapter discusses a chemically diverse group of substances that exert several distinct pharmacological properties: (1) the ability to decrease inflammation, (2) the ability to relieve mild-to-moderate pain (analgesia), (3) the ability to decrease elevated body temperature associated with fever (antipyresis), and (4) the ability to decrease blood clotting by inhibiting platelet aggregation (anticoagulation). These drugs are commonly referred to as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to distinguish them from the glucocorticoids (i.e., the other main group of drugs used to treat inflammation). The term NSAID does not fully describe the pharmacological actions of these drugs; a more inclusive terminology should also mention the analgesic, antipyretic, and anticoagulant effects. However, NSAIDs is the accepted term, and it is used throughout this chapter.
