GRANT PROPOSAL FORMAT

Proposals should adhere closely to the following directions and include all of the components listed.

A. ABSTRACT

Include a brief abstract that provides a summary of the proposal (a brief rationale for the project, the methods to be used, and the expected results and outcomes). Abstracts should be understandable by someone who is not necessarily in the field of expertise of the proposer.

The abstract should answer the following questions:

  1. Why should the project be funded?

  2. What problem is the project trying to solve or what are the issues being addressed?

  3. How will the proposal go about solving the problem or addressing the issue?

  4. What are the expected findings?

  5. What are the implications of the findings?

  6. How will these be disseminated?

B. NARRATIVE

Include the following components (maximum five pages):

  1. Central question being explored or objective being pursued.

  2. Rationale and significance of project: how this project will contribute to the applicant’s discipline, overall research agenda, or university initiatives.

  3. Description of project methodology.

  4. If applicable, names of other faculty or students who will participate in this project; location of research site.

  5. Plans for disseminating the project’s results, such as conferences, workshops, exhibitions and publications, or other appropriate venues.

  6. Potential sources of external monies to which you anticipate applying for further funding.

  7. An explanation of the candidate’s prior work in the field and how the current project fits within the larger scholarly or professional agenda.

  8. A description of the contribution that the successfully completed project will make to the candidate’s scholarly or professional field.
