Frequently during a visit, patients will require instructions on self-examinations, laboratory testing, or tests that they are expected to complete at home and turn in at a later date. Several different people may be involved in patient teaching, including the health care provider, nurses, medical assistants, and laboratory technicians.

In this chapter, we include instructions on some of the more common testing encountered in a primary care setting. Each section includes simple, direct phrases to guide the patient through the instructions or teaching. Since instructions for certain tests are quite specific, at the end of each section there is a chance to ask if the patient has further questions, which may necessitate an interpreter.
